What should I do if my cat eats the litter?Updated 8 days ago

Our pea fiber litter is made from natural, plant-based ingredients like pea fibers, cornmeal, cornstarch, guar gum, and bamboo powder. These ingredients are non-toxic and generally safe for cats if small amounts are ingested.

However, we recommend making sure your cat does not eat the litter regularly or in large quantities. If you notice your cat eating the litter, try to find out why. Sometimes it may be due to boredom or a nutrient deficiency.

Here are some possible solutions:

  • Distraction and enrichment: Make sure your cat has plenty of toys and stimulation to prevent boredom. Cats often eat litter out of curiosity or a lack of activity.

  • Check nutrition: Ensure your cat is getting a balanced diet. Eating litter can sometimes be a sign of nutrient deficiency. Review your cat’s food and consult your vet if necessary.

  • Mild correction: If you catch your cat eating the litter, interrupt the behavior with a firm “No” or a gentle hand clap. It shouldn’t scare your cat, just break the habit.

  • Offer alternatives: Provide safe alternatives to chew on, like catnip toys, chew toys, or special cat chew treats.

  • Restrict access: Supervise your cat near the litter box and limit access when you're not around. You can also place the litter box in an area that your cat can only access under supervision.

  • Mix in other litter types: Mixing the pea litter with a small amount of another, less tempting litter can help reduce interest in eating it.

  • Consult a veterinarian: If the behavior persists, contact your vet. There may be an underlying health issue that needs to be addressed.
